Review of Phenomena (1985) by Tom R — 21 Oct 2010
If you take the slow-paced and weird Phenomena as a fairy tale horror film, you will get more enjoyment out of it. It's nice to see a young Jennifer Connelly acting in such a difficult role; that being a young woman who can communicate with bugs.
It's my favorite Dario Argento movie I have seen so far (although, to date, I haven't seen too many of his films) because it was kind of scary, the cinematography felt alive, and the soundtrack is filled with 80's hard rock.
This clashed with the fairy tale aspect, but at the same time, something felt cool about it. Also, the ending was a shocker and not leisurely like the first two acts. As long as you're not looking for realism (and you're going to want to throw it away with the parts featuring the monkey) and don't mind a bit of macabre murder, you'll like Phenomena.
