Review of Phase IV (1974) by Nicholas W — 19 Jun 2011
A visually impressive sci-fi film about the end of the world. A pair of scientists go out into the middle of Arizona desert to study a new species of Ant's which havent been seen before. The problem being that these ants are super-intelligent mutant ants who are highly adaptable with intelligence far exceeding that of us humans.
Now, I know how retarded the poster looks or just how a ridiculous concept this is, but trust me this is a very well done film. The cinematography is fantastic and it really spends a ton of time with the ants, showing the viewer how intelligent and all-consuming they really are.
The shot compositions are fantastic, the two lead characters are both strong as they start to lose a grip on things when they realize they are no match for these Ants. This film beckons back to the days of truly original, fascinating films which solely relay on imagination and hardwork over computer generated effects.
