Review of Phantoms (1998) by Scott S — 05 Sep 2009
Phantoms (1998) -- [4.5] -- An entire town's population dies of mysterious causes. Ben Affleck, Rose McGowan, Liev Schreiber, and Peter O'Toole try to get to the bottom of things and discover..
. well, I'm not sure what they discovered. I think it was an alien, but it might have been demons or ghosts or something like the black oil from "X-Files". It comes in any shape, likes to burst out of dogs, possess people, and travel through the sewer system.
It's every movie monster you've ever seen all rolled into one. The first half of the movie is moderately suspenseful, but all the clues don't seem to add up to an answer that makes any sense.
Things fall apart quickly as soon as the movie starts to explain itself. Affleck doesn't do this movie any favors (hard to buy him as a sheriff), but it's nice to see Peter O'Toole cutting loose in a horror movie.
