Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Marsha G — 03 Feb 2018
DDL plays my less favorite Mr. Woodcock in film. Emporer's New Clothes Time: This guy has no clothes. (Get it ,.. clothes!) [SPOILER HINTS AHEAD!!!!] This one should have been called The A**hole and The Assassin.
Mix part The Devil Wears Prada and part Misery. Some people will claim this as high art, with a metaphorical analogue between Reynolds maternal relationship and his would be matrimonial one. I am not buying it! There is one acutely good performance here, and that is Lesley Manville as Reynolds Woodcock's sister, Cyril.
She is a smart strong, take no crap kind of woman who knows what is going on around her. I am OK with the production design, the music and cinematography. DDL is certainly an actor to be reckoned with and the lead actress, Vicky Krieps, did make me lean into the film a little harder.
That is important, because this film has a slooowww wind-up. Mostly I hate the story. That's all.
