Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Matthew D — 08 Apr 2018
Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread is yet another overrated film from one highly overrated director. I've never got the appeal of his films and I just never will. This film is basically two acts of slow, uninteresting drama and one final act of ludicrous, horrible twist which makes no sense and has no message to present whatsoever.
The only reason to see this pointless bore is because of Vicky Krieps whose performance is actually much better than the ones from Daniel-Day Lewis and Lesley Manville and thus the Academy's choice to nominate the latter two over her is ridiculous.
But other than her, this is a giant waste of time and there is no doubt in my mind that this is the worst film of the year.
