Review of Phantom Thread (2017) by Tony1984 — 14 Aug 2018
Daniel Day Lewis is easily the greatest Anglo-Irish actor that ever lived. He's an outstanding method actor and it shows here. Completely inhabits his character. Excellent acting performance and he wasn't the only one. Every role is played perfectly.
Where it falls down are the actual personalities. Woodcock was a pretentious anal retentive prigg on the autistic spectrum and I tired of him and his bullying fastidiousness quickly. Elma was also dysfunctional, manifested in a different manner. The story of their sterile colourless lives was not what I would call entertainment. It bordered on boring many times Despite the high fashion everywhere, it felt very colourless and aseptic. I think maybe that was the intention.
The costume department and the production department deserve Oscars for their work however. 50's England is perfectly portrayed.
