Review of Phantom of the Opera (1943) by Kristine H — 11 Feb 2007
Except for Lon Chaney's unforgettable titular creation, the characters are flat and uninteresting, but Chaney is brilliant. The film's spectacle and mixture of black-and-white, two-tone color, and a few Sin City-ish colorings is truly extraordinary.
One of the most visually beautiful films of all time, and with one of the great performances; the rest is a waste of a good story, but the good things are more than enough to make this worthwhile.
