Review of Phantasm (1979) by Justin H — 13 Sep 2009
I recently re-watched this film for the first time in perhaps five or six years, and I'm glad it wasn't as incomprehensible as I remember it being. (Perhaps it was butchered in its cable airing.
) Regardless, what I remembered as being a muddled, confusing mess turned out to be a pretty well done independent horror film. "Phantasm" is still a bit sketchy in a few parts (notably, delineating exactly what the Tall Man's powers are), but there's a certain surreal quality to it that makes the otherwise confusing bits fit.
If you're looking for something different from the standard slasher flicks and zombies, give "Phantasm" a try. It's different, it's intriguing, and it's eminently watchable.
