Review of Phaedra (1962) by Allan C — 23 Dec 2014
Anthony Perkins has mommy issue again in the Jules Dassin film that's a modern retelling of the greek tragedy, Phadra. Melina Mercouri is the star of the film as a Greek shipping magnet who has an affair with her stepson with tragic consequences.
The story, as you would expect with Greek tragedy, is extremely overwrought but that doesn't translate so well to a modern setting. Dasssin directs the film with far more of a European arthouse type of style, which looks more like a Jean Cocteau film than it does one of his noir or caper films.
It's interesting to see Dassin make a film with such style and that alone was enough to hold my interest, but the characters and situations were not so believable or engaging.
