Review of Pete's Dragon (2016) by Jeff J — 13 Aug 2016
Take the original movie from 1977 and remove the following:
1) The playful banter of Eliot and Pete, Elliot's goofy sounds resounding to him.
2) The grandfather being drunk, and questioning if he was credible because of this.
3) The lighthouse, and the whole missing husband storyline.
4) The potion peddlers, who wanted the dragon to make new potions.
5) The crazy school teacher who wanted to reform Pete.
6) The mean step parents wanting to recapture Pere.
What you are left with is a slow plodding narrative that is predictable at best and boring at worst. I hate the fact that people may see this and never experience the charm of the original. The special effects are passable but nothing we have never seen before.
In case you think I'm a hater, I LOVED the Jungle Book remake.
