Review of Pete's Dragon (2016) by Reece L — 23 Jul 2017
I must say, I am not a digging the whole Disney-live-action-remake-milk-every-last-dollar-out-of-fans thing we're seeing. If there's one thing I can't stand in the film buisness, it's cash cows. But beneath all that I see one purpose: remaking the not so memorable Disney classics. And that's what this movie does! And it's great!
So Pete's Dragon, right off the bat, hit me with something I haven't seen in a kids movie in a while: emotion. This movie is a heartfelt Disney movie that the original didn't capture. We care for the characters and feel for them, and want to see what happens next. This movie keeps you consistently wanting to watch it. It's something brand I haven't seen in a while from Disney. I also liked the parallels between the story book Pete's parents give him and how it affects his life. It's a very enjoyable film.
Another great thing besides the emotional punch is, surprisingly, some of the action. Well, it's not exactly action, but I'm not sure what else to call it. There were parts of this movie were I was genuinely on the edge of my seat. That's the first time I've felt that from a movie in a while, and I certainly didn't expect it from this movie. The CGI in this movie is also really impressive.
Overall, in the midst of the unnecessary Disney remakes, Pete's Dragon stands alone. It's a fresh retelling of the not-so-classic story featuring lots of emotion and care for the characters, as well as edge-of-your-seat sequences and great CGI. It's definetly worth watching!
