Review of Peter Pan & Wendy (2023) by Arkboi21 — 04 May 2023
Hi! I watched Peter Pan and Wendy last night with my bestie. I was excited to watch this as the original animated Peter Pan was one of my favorite Disney movies growing up. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my expectations or live up to the hype.
I have to be honest -- this movie was so slow-paced and kind of dull and dark. It wasn't fun, magical, or exciting to watch like the animated classic. The CGI was okay, some parts were well-designed, and others were just terrible.
It never once looked like a magical, fantastical Neverland, and instead, just looked like the cast was filming in Scotland. Regarding the characters -- Jude Law, portraying Captain Hook, is probably the strongest and most stand-out character in the film! Even though he was the villain, I found myself rooting for him and feeling sorry for him.
If there was one character that I disliked the most, it was Peter Pan, played by Alexander Malony. The young actor is clearly inexperienced as the way he portrayed Peter Pan was as a mostly stale and emotionless character.
Furthermore, Pan, in this version, is CLEARLY the true villain. There were a lot of poor writing decisions made as the characters were mostly hollow with little-to-no genuine motivations. This is especially true for Wendy Darling, played by Ever Anderson, who is downright insufferable.
The story and the characters look and feel like mere shells of their former selves. Lastly, Iden. Poli. was too upfront and in your face the entire time. It was obvious that the directors placed POC and different ethnicities in the film strictly to fill a quota or something.
* sighs * I can't say I'd watch it again. It's lost all of its magic and charm, and I'm actually mad at what Disney did to one of my favorite movies.
