Review of Persona (1966) by Nikan A — 19 Jul 2011
"A nurse is put in charge of an actress who can't talk and she has to protect her ". If We want to write the plot of the film we just can write this sentence. "Persona"`s story is This sentence and it is not the whole film. I mean , Persona doesnt have a real Plot because it isnt based on a plot. or screenplay or story or whatever you want to be in a movie.
Persona is based on Emotions of it`s audience . We never can be sure what did we see on the screen . We cant say what happened at all ... we just can feel it or guess about it. and that`s why every one has his own opinion and look to the film.
Some great films Like "The Godfather" , The Shawshank Redemption" or "Lord Of The Rings (trilogy)" , get to their greatness from their Story (powerful screenplay). but "Persona" gets it`s greatness from It`s ambiguity.
This is one of cinema`s high points that a director chooses fimmaking because he cant talk about his obsession in any Kind of art except movies and their shots.
"Today I feel that in Persona , I had gone as far as I could go. And that in these two instances when working in total freedom, I touched wordless secrets that only the cinema can discover." said Bergman. and yes it`s true. "Persona" was a revolutionary among independent movies and Some of them are based on it (in form actually , movies like David Lynch`s "Mulholland Drive" , Mary Harron`s "American Psycho" , Christopher Nolan`s "Memento", Tarkovsky's "Mirror" and Krzysztof Kieślowski`s works.
You see , I cant talk a bout the main story too much , but believe me , this is one of the greatest cinematic experiences you'll ever have. the actresses are great and they can carry the 82 minutes of the film . and of course , Sven Nykvist`s cinematograaphy makes it more breathtaking .
+ this is a Brilliant jewel , Ingmar Bergman`s most inconoclastic work with well done making for fans of classic and Serious Independent films.
