Review of Persona (1966) by Ed Q — 18 Dec 2008
The exquisitely photographed and acted Persona is perhaps the best example of Bergman's ability to externalize various psychological states. Through exposing the artifice of film, he demonstrates that as an artist he has control over his characters and the images on screen.
In contrast his characters represent powerless victims of spiritual silence. Nurse Alma craves convergence with the silent Elisabet, in order to fill the void of her existence. However, Bergman shows that this can only be achieved through dreams, for conscious reality constantly makes us aware of being.
