Review of Persona (1966) by Carl S — 25 Jun 2009
I do not believe I have ever seen a film quite like this. In my mind it ranks right up there with Hiroshoma Mon Amour as cinema at its best. It does indeed explore the persona and the meltdown of a persona with these two women.
If I understand it, Liv Ullman, as the actress in the movie who quits speaking, does so to prevent the breakdown of her persona. Bibi Andersson, as her nurse, keeps talking and indeed suffers the breakdown of her persona in the face of this non-speaking stronger woman.
