Review of Persepolis (2007) by Amraj D — 25 Aug 2010
Even with the simple animation, Marji's character is detailed enough as the movie explores these external and internal forces that shape it. Be it her love of punk music or the governmental laws that she must try and obey, the viewer quickly begins to understand Marji and empathises with her as she tries to break free from the repressive laws acting on her whilst enforcing her own liberal views to her way of life, which she mostly struggles to achieve but does so somewhat by the end.
There are some powerful scenes thrown in too such as the long-bodied Iranian women imposing their fundamental and strict laws on a young Marji or the transformation of Marji into adolesence, making this a clever and powerful movie.
