Review of Persepolis (2007) by Cameron J — 27 Oct 2011
âGo and watch Persepolis, it was the best cartoon to come out of the last decadeâ? was the re-occurring phrase being thrown towards me after every single person I knew watched Marjane Satrapiâ(TM)s animated biopic.
I agree that itâ(TM)s good, but by no means is it the best.
What it achieves in doing is depicting a patriarchal Iran, where women are oppressed, whilst not becoming too preachy or downtrodden in depressing undertones, in fact itâ(TM)s rather funny. The animation although not complex, perfectly fits.
The only problem I have with Persepolis is it reaches no satisfactory conclusion. Of course itâ(TM)s a biopic, and trust me Marjane has led quite an eventful, oppressed and shattered life which is played out more than perfectly onscreen, though it feels that the plot and structure of the story disintegrates in the last half an hour.
When all is said and done Persepolis is exceptional, itâ(TM)s funny, itâ(TM)s sad and more over itâ(TM)s entertaining. Though what Persepolis does best is persuading you that, Iran is a dystopian shit holeâ¦Well for the most part.
