Review of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) by Ian G — 26 Sep 2010
The film was defintely an interesting study of art, obsession for ones art and how it can twist someone in terms of how far one goes to achieve perfection for said art as well as a sense of belonging. Great performances all around by the cast for the majority of the film and interesting to see how perfume was made back in the day and the science of it.
The big issue I had with the project was the final 20 minutes which I am sure polarized a lot of viewers, the over fantazised impact of the perfect scent, how it turned the whole town of Grass into passionate supporters of the perfumer despite his grizzly crimes and how he was able to get away, etc etc, pretty much obliterated all of the good will or as much of it you can muster given where the story was headed.
Unfortunate since up to that point it was stellar. 3 stars for the first two hours and should have been more had it not been for the sever left turn.
