Review of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) by Kristi M — 04 Feb 2015
I now have two movies with baby scenes that will forever disturb me. The first one is Trainspotting (I have seen it more than once but skip those scenes because they are forever seared into my brain and wish I could un-see it) and now I add Perfume to the list. The beginning contains most of the disturbing content and when it moves on to focusing on his "creation" it isn't done in a suspenseful way- grab a girl then it skips past any unpleasantries to her being found posed with no clothes or hair. I also find it to be pretty uneven because it starts off like a creepy supernatural horror movie then decides it wants to be a study piece about religion and society.
Jean Baptiste is Silence of the Lambs creepy so I guess kudos to the writer(s) for having the disturbing baby and psycho in a one two punch. I don't really love or hate this movie. I get the religious and society allusions and noted that his name is Jean-Baptiste. I just appreciate it like I would a work of art that I will always remember but wouldn't personally want to keep it in my home.
