Review of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006) by Kaitlyn B — 15 Feb 2015
The baffling third act completely took me out of it. It just didn't make any sense. I admire its artistic decision; it's a visually and aurally sumptuous movie. The cinematography, the costumes, the set design, and the score are all remarkable.
The first 40 minutes of the film is absolutely horrifying and yet enthralling, so it is a shame that the rest of the movie becomes gradually dull and doesn't quite live up to the height of the first act.
Ben Whishaw gives a solid performance as the protagonist, but the other performances are not so captivating (with the exception of Dustin Hoffman.) Kudos to director Tom Tykwer for adapting a supposedly-unfilmable novel into a very artistic but somewhat emotionally hollow film.
Perfume is a bizarre movie that makes you scratch the back of your head after the viewing.
