Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Matthew J — 10 Jan 2014
Moderately entertaining, but still misses many of the things that make the books so much fun. Much of the ambiguity Percy Jackson's world is glossed over or removed completely, making the world too flat and uninteresting. For example, the fact that one of the pivotal fights of the movie is versus Percy's own half-brother, Polyphemus, which raises questions in Percy's mind: what kind of father is Poseidon that he has such an evil child, and allows him such free rein?
One of the few moments that shine for me was Nathan Fillion as Hermes, in which he seems to actually let some of the conflict and difficulty of being distant father to a problem child show through, but it's over too quickly.
