Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Mloy X — 29 Jun 2014
Mr. D (Stanley Tucci): [Mr. D poured some wine into a glass but it turned to water immediately - a punishment from Zeus] You know, the Christians have a guy who can do this trick in reverse,.
[looking up at the sky, as if speaking to Zeus].
Mr. D (Stanley Tucci): now that's a god.
Unfortunately, like many sequels this too doesn't live to the original. I felt it was kind of a cop-out to have the same villain return for basically the same purpose (the destructions of the Gods) but through a different way. There were some good bits to this film though: I liked Stanley Tucci as Mr. D (short for "Doinysus") he was awesome comic-relief and also a rare treat was Nathan Fillion, who played Hermes; he was just too adorable and awesome. The CG in this film was alright; it was cool to watch Percy use his powers but the coolest CG was the Hippocampus. The rest of the characters were okay-- the other two of the "Scooby-gang" trio: Grover (Brandon T. Jackson) was pretty much absent for most of the film and Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario) was pretty much useless, which was sad because the trio had a great dynamic in the first film and had the potential to have Potter-esque fame. Douglas Smith's Tyson the Cyclops was pretty cool but Clarisse (Leven Rambin) was kind of lame and essentially an unnecessary cause of tension for Percy since he had much bigger fish to fry {SPOILERS}............................ once Luke and the prophecy is revealed. Overall, the whole film was just average, nothing special about the film or how it was executed but the ending was cool enough to make me want to check out the books this film was based on and read the rest of the series since I doubt if there will be another film to follow this one.
