Review of Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (2013) by Dave J — 20 Jun 2014
I am a fan of the series by Rick Riordan so I've read the novel that this movie was based on and am rather familiar with it. I think any fans watching this movie must do so with an open mind and with the understanding that a movie adaptation of a book is an adaptation. Differences between the book and the movie are to be expected. In this case, the differences were quite significant. Generally, most of the main events that happened in the book appeared in the movie but the order of events and cause and effect were changed. Despite the changes, I still enjoyed the movie thoroughly. It helped that clear explanations were given of key people and events.
The Good:
1. I like that this movie was really exciting and fast-paced with many action scenes.
2. The movie was never boring at any moment.
3. The pacing was constant.
The Bad:
1. The CGI could be better.
2. The characters just do not jump out at me. Percy's a tad bland for a hero. Clarisse's too beautiful for a daughter of Ares. If I'm not wrong, she looked different from the description in the book.
Conclusion:
All in all, this was a decent movie but it did not capture my attention nor leave me eager to watch the next movie. It did ignite a desire in me to reread all the books.
