Review of Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief (2010) by Dayi T — 27 Jun 2012
Okay, so check this. Percy Jackson starts out as a movie about the half-human, half-god son of Poseidon seemingly on a mission to find the stolen thunderbolt of Zeus. Why? To stop a god-war from decimating the Earth.
Then it turns into Percy's adventure to rescue his mother from Hades...but he needs three pearls before he can venture down there. So then he and his merry band are off to find the pearls, relegating the bolt to the background until the last half hour when all the plot threads come smashing together in a SyFy Channel movie with a bigger budget.
Uma Thurman, Sean Bean, Rosario Dawson, Catherine Keener, Joe Pantoliano and Pierce Brosnan lend able supporting turns, but this is just a knock-off Harry Potter (or Eragon or The Golden Compass or Cirque du Freak or The Seeker or Jumper or Lemony Snickett.
..you get the point). More often than not, Percy Jackson feels like a SyFy Channel flick. And that's not a good thing.
