Review of People Like Us (2012) by Pat K — 30 Jun 2012
When we face our fears they always melt away like butter. The movie has real things, true feelings, deep things to say. That's why no one will see it, and why critics shirk away in cynicism. They say it's unrealistic whereas they won't have any criticisms of Dark Knight Whavever's SM-costumed clowns flying around giving scientology lessons to everyone.
The real issue is, PLU confronts all the uncomfortable things we do to avoid facing up to out fears and failings, it deals with the death of parents, the way we run from responsibility. It handles it all with Amblin-level filmmaking dexterity and entertaining circumstances, but the truth is never popular.
I know most people will never even bother to see it and that's sad. Kurtzman and Orci are among the few in Hollywood who know what is really going on. If you hate the movies I recommend it won't change your mind, but if you like real things, go see it anyway, in theaters.
