This film and Psycho were released within months of each other. And the poor critical reception for this film is the reason that Alfred Hitchcock decided not to have a press screening for Psycho.

With that in mind, I kind of wonder how Alfred Hitchcock's Psycho, which, in essence, deals with the same general subject of this film would prove to be beneficial to Hitchcock's career as a filmmaker while this was however reviled by critics and considered "disturbing" and "grotesque". In fact, it brought an end to Michael Powell's career.

That being said, let me just say that there's probably nothing sweeter than a crazy fucking German stabbing people with a knife in his tripod and filming the terror in their faces as he does so.
