Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Anthony B — 03 Jun 2007
A terrifying portrait of a serial killer that was unfairly drubbed by critics on its opening though it isnt hard to see why. Far from Powell's other work, Peeping Tom tells the story of a photographer who kills women to observe the pure fear in their faces.
Remniscient of Frankenstein in that the film not only shows a monster to be born out of cruel circumstances but also asks the audience the ultimate taboo, and that is to sympathise with the man. Powell's lurid visual style creates an atmosphere that emphasises the sleazeiness of the environment.
An uneasy yet compelling watch. Just like Mark's films really.
