Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Espen N — 28 Jul 2007
Ingenious serial-killer film, concerning the danger of filmmaking. I had great expectations before watching this, since I'm a Powell/Pressburger fan, and I was definitely not disappointed, on the contrary.
Here we got suspense done the old and hard way, and Michael Powell's technical skills sure shows, with his sophisticated use of strong colors, and camerawork. I was fixed at the moment, in which killer Carl Boehm's own camera, is subjectively making us voyeurs during his first kill.
That sequence in particular left me in awe, and the film just went on to surprise, astonish and challenge me. Those home-videos of the killer's adolescence wasn't exactly comfy, they were so crispy and mysterious, like old' silent horrors.
Definitely a film that sticks with you after first viewing!
