A few months Hitchcock's Psycho, Michael Powell released this one, which would turn out to be his final film--a tragedy, since Powell is as in command and on top of his form here as ever. Just about the greatest movie ever made about a serial killer (with Psycho being the only likely contender in my mind), and as twisted and troubling and true a deconstruction of the voyeurism of cinema as I've ever seen.

Powell's photography is impeccable, Bohm is perfectly cast in the lead, and the script from Leo Marks--which is horrifying, mesmerizing, blackly funny, and psychologically astute--is crazed and brilliant.

A milestone and a bona fide masterpiece of the psychological horror-thriller genre.
