Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Matthew J — 14 Nov 2011
It shows how audiences' tastes change over the years that this film could be so vilified upon its release yet is now regarded as a cast-iron classic. As Martin Scorsese has stated, along with 8 1/2 Peeping Tom shows all that can be said about film directing; whereas 8 1/2 showed a more glamourous side, this shows how the camera can intrude and be used in an aggressive fashion.
The theme of voyeurism gives the film quite a Hitchcockian feel and he was no doubt an admirer of Peeping Tom even if the critics of the day weren't. The film doesn't feel of its time and certainly must have pushed boundaries; by all accounts it damaged Michael Powell's career in the short-term but it turned out being a great piece in his legacy of films.
