Review of Peeping Tom (1960) by Lucas S — 09 Sep 2010
Normally, movies loose their strenght as the time passes, but Peeping Tom, follows the oposite direction. Considered sick and disgusting at the time of it's release, it finally gets it's place as a classic.
Stylistically speaking, the movie dated a bit, I admit I laughed sometimes when I shouldn't because of the melodrama. But Michael Powell's direction, using tones of red and the camera focusing on the main character is very influencial and he was able to create a perfect atmosphere that kept me looking at the scream the whole time, even when nothing was happening.
But what really makes the movie a classic, is the story, a meditation on desire and perversion, and the whole process of filmaking, the voyer in each one of us, the themes showed in the work are actually more important nowadays than they were at 1960, it is fascinating to note the importance it had, directly or indirectly, in the movie history.
Final Rating: 9.7.
