Review of Peacock (2005) by Dean B — 27 Apr 2010
*** (out of four).
A strange film that is a little bit like Hitchcock's "Psycho" with a dash of "The Crying Game". Though it isn't completely successful, it does feature a tremendous performance from Cillian Murphy in a difficult and unbalanced role. It is nice that it moves along in a fashion that is unlike most thrillers. It lets its characters actions and personality be the part that is a bit creepy.
Murphy plays a troubled man in the small town of Peacock, Nebraska. His mind hasn't been on track since his mother passed a year ago. lately he has taken to dressing up as a woman and posing as his own new wife. It deinitely has the neighbors intrigued. But all his secrets are threatened when a passing train car dislodges in his yard and now all the media is descending on him.
The best part of Murphy's performance is how he is a basket case when he is his regular self. But he becomes self-assured and level headed once he puts on the dress.
