I wanted to like this movie much more than I did, but it was just too sappy, too trite and we've heard these messages before in so many other sports movies. It's no surprise the book was released in 1980.
The director's hand was also clearly evident in this - anyone who's seen POWDER and knows what this guy was convicted for will know what I mean. It just made for some creepy moments...
