Review of Payback (1999) by Malcolm R — 20 Apr 2008
I'd be curious to see the director's cut (Payback Straight Up I think it's called) but from what I remember, I was very disappointed and borderline offended. I loved the premise and thought the marketing was great ("Get Ready to Root for the Bad Guy!") but the movie itself failed to deliver.
For one thing, nothing about Gibson's character is really bad. I read Hedgeland (coming off the success of LA Confidential) had this movie taken away from him and edited by the studio and/or Gibson.
Perhaps the director's cut is more satisfying...
