Review of Payback (1999) by Stephen E — 10 Sep 2012
I haven't seen the director's cut (which I have heard is much better), but the simplified version of "Payback" isn't all too great. It has a few very funny instances of dark humor, two great extended cameos from William Devane and James Coburn and a semi-likable performance from Mel Gibson, but as a whole, the film just feels shallow and incomplete.
Brian Helgeland's direction is uneven in areas and his script just doesn't work half of the time. I won't say that I didn't like "Payback," but I do feel like it could have been more.
Gotta love that scene with James Coburn though. "Man, that's just mean!".
