Review of Pawn Sacrifice (2015) by Nick C — 10 Nov 2015
Chess is as much about the player as the pieces. Fischer is strong in tactics and has the moxie to destroy his opponents. (one Russian player describes.
Playing Fischer is like having been crushed by a falling brick wall.).
But Fischer lacks support; the Russians have team support ; Fischer has to slay all the intricacies of tournament chess by himself. Enter a catholic priest and a mysterious helper who voluntarily and patiently support him while failing to humanize him. Fischer does not always win, and that shows he is human after all.
