Review of Pawn Sacrifice (2015) by Oniku N — 18 Mar 2016
Definitely Tobey Maguire's best performance as Chess prodigy and patriot for the US and against USSR, Bobby Fischer. You hate him, but you feel for him because you understand his process and state of mental health.
Liev Schreiber stole the movie though. He didn't have one line in English and conveyed more character than anybody else in the film. He was very calm and solemn throughout, like Boris Spassky was, but you understood everything he was thinking and feeling.
I don't understand anything about Chess. I don't know what the difference is between a check and a mate, but, this film made the game of chess interesting, even though I had no clue what was going on.
Very good movie. Highly recommended.
