Review of Patton (1970) by Leighton T — 03 Aug 2010
It's less of a war film and more of an introspective piece on one of the greatest military minds the US Army has ever seen. George C. Scott seems to be every bit the ounce that Patton was. He was born to play him.
It does help they probably had the same demeanor, the same characteristics. But, it's also the kind of performance where you don't have to know a thing about the person in question, you can just tell immediately that the actor is capturing them perfectly.
Karl Malden is terrific support and the perfect second man to play Patton's "second man." The script is tightly wound in its almost three hours, the war scenes are terribly compelling and exciting, and the characters are so well presented that the energy of the film never once lacks.
One of the best choices the Academy has made.
