Review of Patton (1970) by Ryan Gibbons — 21 Aug 2010
Maybe Im just in a bad mood right now but the last two movies I've seen are films that have been called "great" and both have been incredibly disappointing. Patton is one of the worst war movie/ bio pics that I've ever seen.
I can't remember the last time that I actually found it difficult to watch a movie but this movie moves slowly and it's a lot longer than it needs to be. I hated the camera work in this film. It's so constricted, all we see are the people, there really isn't any cinematography it was just three hours of pressing the camera up against peoples faces, and they always seem to be in small rooms and I got claustrophobic a couple of times.
I did not find any of the scenes even remotely engaging mainly because it was poorly shot. The acting was pretty good, Scott is the best part of the entire film. With the rest of the cast I felt like I was watching an army of zombies, a bunch of guys that look remarkably alike and have all of them give pretty much the same performance.
I don't know, I've seen a lot movies this week, maybe I should take a little break, probably love movies too much though.
