Review of Patton (1970) by Anssi V — 10 Sep 2011
Disjointed hagiography of a disjointed figure. Rescued by its honesty and the magnificent performance by George. Sad to see subsidiary characters, with the noble exception of Karl Maldren, reduced to stereotypes, but according to Roger Eburt, no weaker for that.
The film touches on Patton's nuttiness and it is revealing how much faith the powers that be put in someone close to the edge of sanity. Interestingly out of tune with the anti-establishment fare of the early 70s.
Well crafted and thoughtful.
