Review of Patriot Games (1992) by Stephen S — 18 Oct 2009
A very good film, but I was pissed because it's so different from the book. They really messed up the ending here--I'm surprised Tom Clancy let them get away with this. In the book, there's this massive gunfight between the British Secret Service/FBI agents and the IRA terrorists at the end, all while Jack Ryan & co.
are fighting the terrorists who have entered the house. The escape scene is way cooler in the book too, with Jack and everybody fleeing to a Navy base. The Marines there engage Sean Miller and his fellow IRA guys, and trap them in a docked ship, where they eventually surrender or are killed.
It's much cooler than the shitty ending that this movie has. Thankfully, it doesn't ruin the rest of the movie, but this version of Patriot Games would've been awesome if it had stuck with the book's storyline.
