Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Jordan T — 06 Oct 2008
Not one of my favorites as I could take it or leave it. With that said though it is an effective "anti-war" film. I tried to argue that it wasn't, but my points said otherwise. Being shot in black and white really gave it a good tone.
The title is also ironic as it's all about the corrupt side of the military and how they'll do anything to save face. This was the first Kirk Douglas film I've seen and I think it's amazing how much Michael looks and acts like him.
Wayne Morris had a great performance as the coward general, but other than him and Douglas no one makes a truly memorable effort. On certain films I'm a big fan of realism, so my biggest beef is how this focuses on the WWI French Army and NO ONE is french or even really attempts to be.
