Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by William R — 08 Oct 2008
Paths of Glory is absolutely pitch perfect all the way through. A fascinating story of three men on trial for their lives for 'cowardice in the face of the enemy'. This film has a lot to say about the senseless brutality of war and says it with heart wrenching precision.
The film argues compassion, but on the flip side it also argues that in some people's eyes, if you want to win, you must at times be heartless, swift and not get emotionally attached to the men you may have to send to their deaths.
I can see the validity in both points in the context of war, but the loudest and most poignant point being made by the film is that ultimately, war is pointless.
