Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by John E — 06 Dec 2010
Long before Kubrick made his grim and viscerally grisly war movie "Full Metal Jacket" he tackled the war genre with this equally grim examination of the chain of command and the ridiculousness of war's politics.
It is perhaps more darkly absurd (and wearily depressing) than "Jacket" since a lot of the actions are based on dialogue and the arrogance of military higher-ups. We are quickly enervated and battered, just as the French soldiers are; their continual suffering at the hands of their childish, churlish leaders continually insulted me and made me shake my head in disbelief.
A movie that has lost not a single iota of relevance today. For a more visceral war experience, try Kubrick's later movie, but for a more cerebral experience, give this one a watch.
