An arrogant French general, looking for a promotion, idiotically orders an undermanned regiment to take a heavily fortified German hill. When the impossibly suicidal mission goes awry, this general (Adolphe Menjou) attempts to cover up his blunder by having several soldiers executed for cowardice.

The only man who can save them is Col. Dax (Kirk Douglas), a courageous former lawyer who is disgusted by the whole debacle. This film, one of director/co-writer Stanley Kubrick's earliest masterpieces, is a biting and meticulously crafted tale regarding the internal politics of war.

One gets a empathetic sense of indignation as the generals sit in their ivory towers and blithely feed oceans of men to the machine guns in the trenches.
