Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Greg D — 28 Mar 2013
Boy. This a shocking and moving film with great acting from everyone involved. Seriously, how good is Kirk Douglas? And just check out Kubrick's sublime use of the camera with those painfully long tracking shots as the soldiers head over the top.
It's a great example of a tense and realistic battle scene that doesn't resort to handheld shakiness, as seems to be the norm these days (Although not to disparage Spielberg's seminal Normandy sequence).
"Paths of Glory" is haunting and powerful.
