Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Art S — 29 Jan 2016
Even before Kubrick was breaking grounds in cinema making by his stunning visuals and techniches, he was being radical with the underlying anti-war, anti-establishment content in this Black & white apparently "classic hollywood" executed world war I Drama (which he also wrote, as most of his work).
This does not mean that paths of glory isn't matched to his usual near perfect level of movie making, au contraire, it is a glorious film, very well acted, strongly scripted, steadily paced, and flawlessly shooted.
Be prepared for an extremely different style from the more familiar Kubrick we've come to know. Paths of glory also features my favorite ever Kirk Douglas performance, one I think was ahead of the era by it's subtle approach.
As almost any of Kubrick's work, a movie ahead of its time, and one of the best World War I movies ever made...
