Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Jc S — 09 Nov 2009
Paths of Glory is probably one of the most different war movies I have seen. It takes place in France in 1916 during World War 1. This is one of Stanley Kubricks earlier movies and of course it's brilliant.
Let me just say, if a movie has the words "A Stanlely Kubrick Film" on it, it will be an amazing experience and even if you don't like the film you will feel moved in someway. The thing I love about Kubrick is that every single movie he made was completely different from each oher.
All the performances in the film were great and the best performance of course came out of Kirk Douglas. I thought the film was very ahead of it's time in terms of camera work, direction, and effects.
It's probably the greatest anti war statement ever commited to film. The direction was of course brilliant. I have had nothing but good things to say about Kubrick and I'll try not to go on another Kubrick rant.
I will say the first part of the movie was kind of dull but from the anthill battle and forward the movie just kept building up. The execution scene was very hard to watch but it was brilliantly done.
It really does show how horrible war is and how it should it be put to in end immedietly. In conclusion, Stanley Kubrick is the god of film. Watch this movie. TEN STARS!
