Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by The Critic ( — 27 Aug 2012
This superbly written, exceptionally acted anti-war drama is a masterstroke for co-writer/director Stanley Kubrick who presents an intense tale associated with the hierarchy and practices associated with an equally intense battle such as World War I.
Kirk Douglas, Ralph Meeker, George Macready, Wayne Morris and Joe Turkel are absolutely flawless, but the emotional sucker-punch is cemented here by Timothy Carey (as the gruff Private Ferol), whose angst-laden ramblings as he marches to his death (which flows more naturally than you'd expect from a Kubrick piece), is not only disturbing, but is also easily one of the most haunting performances ever depicted on screen.
