Review of Paths of Glory (1957) by Ol R — 30 Oct 2012
The kind of movie where you really understand the phrase; "They don't make 'em like they used to.".
And it's just about perfect, as close to perfect as I can think of for a film. It's fascinating to see where Kubrick started out (sort of), and I actually think it might be his best war film, ahead of his other masterpiece; Full Metal Jacket. The acting and dialogue are just superb, in a pre-70s kind of way, and it's incredibly cinematic. There are even traces of Kubrickian weirdness that he'd later take to the extreme with his Steadicams and so on. It'd be incredible to see this in a theater.
